Moving, Packing, and Self-Storage Tips

  • Make a list of packing materials needed such as boxes, bubble pack, tape, marking pens, rope, drop cloths, mattress and furniture covers, etc...

  • Do not use printed newspaper to pack with.
The ink may smudge off on your items.

  • Plan your storage space.
Place the items that you need to access often in the front. Allow for walkways. Keep valuable items towards the back of the unit. Consider change of season needs and place those items conveniently near the door.

  • Make up an inventory of the contents of every box, number all 4 sides of the box and write the corresponding number on your inventory. You'll appreciate this later when searching for something. Keep a copy in your space for convenience plus one in a safe place.

  • Place your storage items on 2"x 4" boards to guard against dampness.

  • Use uniform size boxes for easy stacking. When packing boxes, try to limit the weight to 30 lbs. or less per box. Stack light boxes on top of heavier boxes.

  • Do not stack heavy or folded objects where they could shift or collapse when you move or need access.

  • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in bubble or Styrofoam wrap and placed in dish pack boxes. Stack those on top.

  • Pack clothing in a wardrobe carton. Keep your out-of-season clothes accessible, you may have your belongings in storage longer than anticipated.

  • Use cedar chips or mothballs when storing wool items to prevent moth damage.

  • Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for china, silverware, and other small items. Wrap in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.

  • Larger appliances make excellent storage for blankets, towels, tablecloths, and clothes.

  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped and labeled "FRAGILE." Store upright.

  • "Break down" tables with removable legs to conserve space.

  • When you disassemble electronics such as computers and place small colored stickers on the cable and on the corresponding outlet. If possible, use the original packing for electronic items.

  • Sofas and loveseats can be stored on end to save floor space. Always place a protective waterproof cover under the end on the floor. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic and placed on top.

  • Wax wood furniture before storing it. Use sheets or cotton cloth to cover furniture.

  • Lawn tools like rakes, shovels and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans.

  • Leave a small space between the goods stored and the storage unit's walls.

  • Make sure appliances are thoroughly clean and dry. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly open.

  • CAUTION: It is against the law to store materials that are HAZARDOUS or COMBUSTIBLE such as gasoline, solvents, paint, etc. Drain all remaining gasoline from lawn mowers, power tools, boats, snowmobiles, etc.

  • Do NOT store food items that can attract pests and rodents.
